Torn

Torn, 2025

When “Torn” between two decisions, often a devil and an angel, but instead, I chose a celestial moon and sun in the eyes.

I came up with the idea after a rough day and crying in my car, I looked in the mirror in my sun visor, something about the lighting made me think about a piece that was just a close up on the eyes, torn between a decision, as I was, but I did not want the cliché of the devil and angel, landing on the sun and the moon.

I used watercolor for most of the piece, its sheer, fluid quality almost blending into the background. Then I used colored pencil and a Micron pen to make them stand out against the watercolor.

The moon is the ‘bad’ decision, but it does not fully cover the eye, as there are plenty of times when one might have to sit in the ‘bad’ or face the consequences of one’s actions.

The sun is the ‘good’ decision, but it can also be blinding, and it can also leave one not owning up to the bad choices one has made in the past.
