Split Brain

12” x 16”

Split Brain, 2025

The two hemispheres of the brain are the left hemisphere, which governs logic and analytical thinking, and the right hemisphere, which governs creativity and emotional processing.

I had the idea of depicting the two halves of the brain: the right side in pencil, in a grayscale semi-realistic style, and the left side in multiple media, in a colorful, cartoonish style. Both women looked out into the world through windows or eyes that came to me right before I went to bed, right before the school year (2025-2026) began.

The right side is done entirely in pencil. It is very clean and organized, with the woman in a pantsuit and a ‘power stance’ with pin-straight hair, a very ‘tamed’ look.

The left side used multiple media: gouache (the floor and wall), watercolor (the woman beside the skirt), colored pencil, oil pastel, water-based markers, acrylic marker, acrylic paint, and micron pen (outline). It is messy and unorganized, with the woman in a more boho-style outfit with a patchwork skirt and in a more playful pose with curly hair, a very ‘outgoing’ look.
